Table Tennis
Newsletter No. 1
Welcome to our first Table Tennis
Newsletter. This hopefully will give a brief insight to what goes on in the
Table Tennis section.
Debden has four teams in the West Essex league with the A team being in the 2nd
division and they showed a marked improvement finishing 3rd compared to 7th the
previous year. The B, C and D teams are all in the 3rd division with the B team
again having a fairly successful season finishing a creditable 3rd. Our other
two teams finished mid table with only a couple of points separating them. We
are hoping for further improvements for next season and hopefully, with the
acquisition of a Romford league player on the cards which should boost our
chances. We do not have to travel too far for the away matches with Epping and
Chingford being about the furthest away while most of the other games are within
a two mile radius.
With two home and away matches every week there is obviously no available room
to practice. Therefore, in addition to the league games, we take the opportunity
on Tuesday mornings by having a 2/3 hour session of playing doubles and with an
average of 10/12 turning up, this is a most enjoyable morning helped by a break
for tea and biscuits plus of course a good old natter.
Some of the players have been associated with the club for well over 25 years
but obviously with the years catching up on them 'are past their sell-by date'
and with their serious days now over they much prefer just to have a knock-up
and a cuppa but not forgetting that one can still see that they were very good
in their hey-day as they still have the shots which you do not lose in latter
years.
We also have the Len Rowe Doubles Challenge Tournament every year and the
winners can be seen in the club house displayed on the wall. This is named after
Len who for nearly 50 years gave his time, heart and soul for the benefit of all
members of the Debden Sports Club. Long may he be remembered.
Stop Press
At
the end of April, the West Essex individual tournament took place at the
Woodford Wells Club and we are very please to announce that Chris Penrose, who
was a regular player for the Debden A team, not only won the Division 2 and
under title but also beat the number 1 seed to take the Division 1 title as well
so from all members who are associated with the Debden Sports Club,
congratulations Chris upon your success.
