Newsletter No. 4

With the half way mark upon us, Debden teams are having mixed fortunes. The 'A' team were at one time top of the 2nd division and this is without the services of their star player of last season Chris Penrose. However, his younger brother David is following in his footsteps with an average of 83% while Bryan Taylor who was drafted in from one of the other teams to replace Chris, plus Simon (daddy) Penrose, are having a steadying influence.

In the 3rd division, of our other three teams, only the 'B' team are doing reasonably well whilst the 'C' and 'D' teams are holding the rest up at the bottom being equal on points.

With quite a number of players unable to play on the fixed match dates and the loss of three players at the start of the season, we have been fortunate to acquire the services of two lady players Trish Reynolds and Sue Portch and they join Dave Wilson in the 'B' team. Both also play in the Romford league.

Debden Win League Cup Final

Debden 'D' beat the league champions Redbridge Social 5-4 in a tense league cup final match at Woodford Wells for the 'Hale Cup'.

Coming back from a 3-1 deficit, Bryan Taylor and Bob Castor both beat the oppositions number 1 player who had previously gone the whole season in the league without losing a game. This made the match score 4-4 which led to a 9th game doubles decider. Again Debden came back from being 2-1 down and Bryan Taylor and Richard Wintle clinched the match winning 11-7 in the 5th game.

The Debden players wish to thank those who came to support the team which was really appreciated and this probably gave the players an incentive to win the match. Redbridge Social were very gracious in defeat although they were a bit shell-shocked as they admitted they thought they would win.
